Lying about your work experience, qualifications and skills during job applications or on your resume can lead to dismissal, even if the lie is not discovered until years later.
Case law example
For example, an employee at Sjaloom Zorg had lied about having a completed MBO education. She had taken that course, but had not obtained her diploma. When her employer asked her for the diploma, she always came up with an excuse to postpone it. Also, the previous work experience on her resume was not correct.
The employer announced that it would fire the employee if she did not still provide her diploma. The employer also wanted to talk to her about the health care institutions where she had previously worked according to her resume. The employee then called in sick and still did not provide anything, after which she was summarily dismissed.
The Rotterdam subdistrict court found that the employee had deliberately lied about her work experience and her diploma, even though she knew that this was required for the job at the health care institution. The immediate dismissal was therefore justified. She also had to pay the employer's legal costs.
