What if you get sick during your vacation?

If you get sick during your vacation does it cost you vacation days? The answer is basically no!

Sick in your vacation

In principle, no vacation days are withheld over the days you are sick during your vacation. The employer is not allowed to do this. However, something else may have been or may be agreed on above-legal vacation days (over 20).

What should I do?

If you get sick on vacation, call in sick immediately and check carefully after your vacation to make sure your employer has not withheld too many vacation days. In addition, make sure that you can be contacted by your employer during your vacation. Do you get better during your vacation? Report this immediately.

Proof that you are sick

To be on the safe side, get proof that you went to a doctor. Employers often put this requirement in an absence protocol. You could seek treatment from a doctor and send or give proof of this to your employer, just do so without privacy-sensitive information.
