What is a petition?

A petition is a document containing a request and substantiation of that request, which is filed with the court A petition is a document in which a particular request is filed with the court. The petition states, among other things, what facts preceded the request, what the grounds of the request are (i.e., what the substantiation is), and what the request specifically entails such as, for example, a request for dissolution of the employment contract and/or the award of certain (severance) benefits.
