What is training?
Training is the process of upskilling and retraining employees to improve their knowledge and skills. Employers are often required to provide necessary training to enhance employee employability and ensure that employees can (continue to) perform their jobs. Mandatory training comes into play, for example, in the context of safety such as when firefighters are required to obtain certain safety certifications. Training may also be necessary when, in the opinion of the employer, the employee is dysfunctional. The employer is then obliged to use training (and any other means) to improve the employee's performance as much as possible. Also in the context of the reemployment obligation and when a position becomes vacant, the employer must examine whether and how training can help in those situations. With the advent of the Predictable and Transparent Terms of Employment Act (Wtva), it is also stipulated, among other things, that necessary training is at the employer's expense and that this compulsory training is considered working time(Section 7:611a of the Civil Code).
