During the winter months, it is essential to pay attention to employee safety and well-being when working in cold weather conditions. Here are some important concerns to consider.
Cold weather: flexibility expected
Although there is no legal temperature limit for working in cold conditions, it is important to deal (preventively) with the challenges that working in (extremely) cold conditions poses to employees. Be open to consultation and consider consulting a health and safety expert if there are doubts about the workability of the conditions. The temperature and/or weather conditions in the workplace must not be harmful to health. If damage to health is imminent, employees may stop work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Cao Guidelines
Several collective bargaining agreements contain specific guidelines regarding working in cold weather conditions. Make sure you are aware of these guidelines and communicate them clearly to your employees.
Opportunities during cold weather
Consider having employees perform alternative tasks indoors if working outside is not feasible due to weather conditions. Frequent breaks in a heated and sheltered area and providing protective clothing can also help maintain productivity while ensuring the safety of your workers.
Safety first
Know that your employees stopping work is permitted (only) if there is an immediate threat to their health or safety. Ensure that adequate safety measures are in place and that your workers are aware of procedures in case of extreme cold.
By keeping these concerns in mind and acting proactively, you can ensure that your employees stay safe and healthy while working in cold weather conditions and comply with the rules in the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
